Dear Students,

Deborah Lawson from the California State Bar will be on campus this Wednesday to discuss the Moral Character Application process.  She will explain the process, answer general questions from the audience and then be available to meet with students individually to discuss more sensitive issues.  Ms. Lawson’s presentation will be in Classroom C from 12:30 to 1:30 PM.  We will be serving pizza and drinks. All students are encouraged to attend.

Reading Tutors needed! Volunteer as a Reading Partner today!

Help make a difference in your community! Reading Partners is seeking volunteer tutors Monday through Thursday, between 9 AM and 5 PM. It is a one hour a week commitment. Volunteer hours count toward the Capital Commendation for Public Service. Bret Hart Elementary School is within walking distance of McGeorge. This program is eligible for pay under the federal work study program. The pay is $10 per hour. Reading Partners is a nonprofit organization that recruits and trains community volunteers to provide one-on-one literacy tutoring to students who are struggling with reading. Tutors deliver a highly effective, research validated curriculum and are supported by program staff who are onsite at all times. Fall Photo Shoot

Pacific McGeorge is getting ready for a Fall photo shoot! We are looking for individuals to join us and serve as “talent” in our promotional photos.  We will be solidifying a particular date and time in the next two weeks, so if you are willing to serve as models in these photos, please RSVP to Chad Tittle at ctittle@pacific.edu. Please send your email address, phone number and any dates and times that are excluded for you (i.e. – class schedule).  We are hoping to take most photos in the early am or in the eve around 6 PM.

Run for Student Bar Association (SBA) First Year Rep!

The SBA is the student organization that represents McGeorge School of Law before the American Bar Association (ABA). The ABA is the professional association of attorneys that govern the legal field and ABA accredited law school academic policies. The elections process for SBA First Year Representative will begin this week. Please contact the SBA Election Committee Chairs Sean Baird at s_baird2@u.pacific.edu and Jennifer Trotter at j_trotter@u.pacific.edu if you are interested in running for First Year Representative for more information. As the SBA First Year Representative, your primary duty will be to represent the interests of your class before the SBA Board.  As a voting member of the SBA Board, you will have a voice in the decision making process of the SBA.  Lastly, as First Year Representative, you will also be responsible for the “End of Year Party” celebrating the completion of your first year of law school.  

ExamSoft – Registration and Uploading

Don’t forget to register (first years) or re-register (returning students) for ExamSoft! The registration page is here  (see email sent to all students on 9/8 for instructions).  You can then download any available exams. Reminders are sent to students who haven’t yet downloaded prior to exams, so always check your “u.pacific.edu” email at least once daily and especially during exam periods. Any questions, Dan Breuer in the Library can offer technical assistance at dbreuer@pacific.edu or contact the Faculty Support Office. Don’t wait until the last minute and then discover you have a computer issue.

Notice Regarding Payment of Student Club Dues at the Business Office

There are a couple of important things you need to know before coming to the business office to pay your club dues – these tips should save you time or the inconvenience of having to return to our office another time:

1.Our system does not have the capability of accepting credit or debit card transactions; we are able to accept cash or checks in form of payment.

2.You will need to know the amount your club charges for due as we do not have a list of charges in our office.

And, as always if you have questions we can help you answer please contact us by calling  916.739.7054 or by emailing the Business Office.

WE WANT YOU – Admissions Office Looking for Student Ambassadors

The Admissions Office is looking for student applicants to the Student Ambassador Program for the 2014-2015 Academic Year. Volunteer student ambassadors will serve as the face of Pacific McGeorge and assist the admissions team in the recruitment process by giving tours, communicating with prospective students, applicants and admitted students, and by attending on-campus and local off-campus recruitment events. All upper division students are eligible to apply and must submit a statement of interest, an unofficial law school transcript, and a current resume. California State Bar Moral Character Event

Drugs and Damages: A Debate about California’s Proposition 46   

4:45 – 5:45 PM | Classroom E

Attorneys representing both sides of the Proposition 46 debate will present their sides in a discussion moderated by Professors Levine and Moylan. Proposition 46 proposes  changes to California’s Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA), which currently sets pain and suffering damages at $250k. Proposition 46 would also require drug testing for physicians and create new standards for prescribing certain drugs to patients. This event is co-sponsored by the Civil Justice Association of California, Consumer Attorneys of California, the Pacific McGeorge Capital Center for Law and Public Policy, and the Pacific McGeorge Governmental Affairs Students Association. If you are interested in pursuing a rewarding and exciting legal career, do not miss the upcoming Prosecutor Minority Recruitment Workshop. This is a one night event, consisting of two parts: (1) a panel discussion involving prosecutors from federal, state and local jurisdictions talking about life as a prosecutor, the role of minorities in positions of power and decision making, and the hiring practices of each office; (2) the attorneys will separate into small groups where they will provide advice on interview techniques and provide feedback regarding submitted resumes and cover letters. WORK STUDY POSITIONS in The Office of Advancement

The Office of Advancement has two work study positions open that support Alumni Relations and Events. Both positions have a heavy emphasis on researching and verifying alumni contact information. They will also entail answering the alumni relations line and assisting callers with general information about upcoming alumni events, and general questions, as well as making phone calls to alumni to invite them to upcoming events. Help will be needed in preparing for alumni events. There will be special projects that will arise, and other duties as assigned daily. WORK STUDY POSITION in Admissions Office

The Admissions Office is seeking upper division work study students to assist the admissions team with daily administrative needs and tasks. Work study students will also assist in recruiting activities including giving tours to prospective students, communicating with prospects, applicants and/or 

admitted students, as well as, assisting the admissions team during on-campus recruiting events. The position requires superior communication and problem solving skills, attention to detail and accuracy, strong organizational skills and punctuality. WORK STUDY POSITION in Graduate & International Programs Office

The Graduate & International Programs Office is looking for a work study student who will be able to assist in a variety of areas: Provide tours to prospective law students, answer phones, do data entry and clerical duties including scanning and uploading documents to files, stuffing envelopes, making folders, assist in processing applications, pack for recruiting events, update information in database, send emails to applicants.  We are looking for someone who has good communication and problem solving skills, attention to detail and accuracy, the ability to prioritize workload, strong organization skills, is punctual, enthusiastic and Professional.
