The Dave Nee Foundation

Dave Nee was a promising, well liked law student, who took his own life. In his memory the Dave Nee Foundation was created. The Dave Nee Foundation’s mission is to eliminate the stigma associated with depression and suicide by promoting and encouraging not only the diagnosis and treatment of depression among young adults, but also the education of young people, their families, and friends about the disease of depression. We believe that a principal reason for the high suicide rate in the United States is a glaring lack of sufficiently candid discussion about, and early treatment of, depression. We hope to spread the message that depression and thoughts of harming oneself are common and that treatment for depressed and suicidal thoughts must become socially acceptable.

About The Presenter:

Upon graduating from Georgetown University as an English and Theology major, Katherine Bender began teaching at an independent Catholic secondary school for girls in Philadelphia. During this time, she became increasingly interested in the social concerns of young women and decided to pursue a degree in community counseling with a focus on women’s issues at the University of Scranton. After completing an internship providing individual counseling to undergraduate students at a residential college, as part of her Masters degree in counseling, she began working as a full time mental health counselor for college students in Daytona Beach, Florida. Recognizing that advocating for students with mental health issues in higher education would likely require a Ph.D.; Kate began her doctoral work at Old Dominion University in January of 2011 and is currently a doctoral candidate conducting research for her dissertation on college student suicide prevention. She joined the team at the Dave Nee Foundation as programming consultant in September of 2012 and in this role will coordinate the Uncommon Counsel program. She sees her role with the Dave Nee Foundation as an excellent way to continue to provide outreach services and to raise awareness about depression, anxiety, and suicide prevention.
