2015 LSAC DIVERSITY INITIATIVES INTERN
LSAC is now accepting applications for the 2015 LSAC Diversity Initiatives Summer Internship. This is a great opportunity for a law student to gain exposure to legal education and to gain a deeper understanding of LSAC’s Diversity Initiatives. Please read and follow the application submission requirements carefully. Due to the vast number of applications, incomplete and improperly submitted applications will not be considered. Previous LSAC Diversity Initiatives Interns have gone on to establish outstanding careers in private and public interest law, government, and higher education. McGeorge App Now Available For Easier Access

Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa

The civil rights struggles of South Africa are well known in the United States. Filmmaker Abby Ginzberg has now produced a powerful documentation of an award-winning documentary, Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa. Soft Vengeance is a film about Albie Sachs, a lawyer, writer, art lover, and freedom fighter, set against the dramatic events leading to the overthrow of the apartheid regime in South Africa. There will be a discussion with Filmmaker Abby Ginzberg after the screening of Soft Vengeance.  This event is a part of the Pacific McGeorge Diversity Week celebration. About Albie Sachs.
Forcing the Spring: Inside the Fight for Marriage Equality

Jo Becker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for The New York Times, where she has broken stories on everything from the United States’ lethal program to kill suspected terrorists to the British phone-hacking affair and the Penn State child sexual abuse scandal. She has taught investigative journalism as a visiting professor at Princeton University, and her work has earned her numerous awards. A Washington Post series she coauthored on Vice President Dick Cheney won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. About Jo Becker.

Field Placement: June 22 to Aug.
The Inter-American Summer Program in Guatemala is a truly bilingual and inter-cultural approach to legal education. Substantive law classes are taught in Spanish or English, depending on student proficiency. The program also offers Spanish language classes and bilingual field placements. Learn more here.

Salzburg, Austria
Courses: July 5 to July 24
Pacific McGeorge’s long-standing program on International Legal Studies is a three-week program that offers international and comparative law courses in both the public and private law fields. Classes are held in the Law Faculty building at the University of Salzburg, located in a renovated 16th Century palace in the heart of Salzburg’s historic Old Town. Learn more here.

2015 California Water Law Symposium (Water Law Society, Environmental Law Society)

The 2015 California Water Law Symposium addresses current and future water law and policy issues in California, focusing on opportunities for collaboration in water management and exploring possible resolutions to issues that will shape the future of our state. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Wasted Water: Reasonable Use Law in 21st Century California.” McGeorge will have a panel on agricultural water use efficiency in the Central Valley. The Symposium is a collaborative, student-led effort between Golden Gate, Boalt, UC Hastings, University of San Francisco, UC Davis, Santa Clara, and McGeorge. Every year, the Symposium brings together academics, practitioners, policymakers, scientists, community members, and students to hear from leading professionals on pressing water issues. VOLUNTEER & EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Reading Tutors needed! Volunteer as a Reading Partner today!
Help make a difference in your community! Reading Partners is seeking volunteer tutors Monday through Thursday, between 9 AM and 5 PM. It is a one hour a week commitment. Volunteer hours count toward the Capital Commendation for Public Service. Bret Hart Elementary School is within walking distance of McGeorge. This program is eligible for pay under the federal work study program. The pay is $10 per hour. Reading Partners is a nonprofit organization that recruits and trains community volunteers to provide one-on-one literacy tutoring to students who are struggling with reading. Tutors deliver a highly effective, research validated curriculum and are supported by program staff who are onsite at all times. To sign up to be a Reading Partner, visit the Reading Partner website. As you gear up for your spring seminars and independent study and note supervisions, I offer an annual reminder of the ABA Tort Trial Insurance Practice Section Student Writing Competition.

As last year, the deadline is set at May 1 to maximize inclusion of semester papers. The scope of TIPS is quite broad–TIPS Committee list.

The competition is open to all ABA Law Student Division members. Submitters need not be ABA TIPS members, but why shouldn’t they be? TIPS membership is free for ABA law student members.

ABA Tort Trial Insurance Practice Section Student Writing Competition Law 

Students for Reproductive Justice (LSRJ) in collaboration with the Center for Reproductive Rights, is pleased to announce the Call for Submission for the tenth annual Sarah Weddington Writing Prize for New Student Scholarship in Reproductive Rights.

This year, the Sarah Weddington prize will have no specific theme, but will be open to fresh student scholarship exploring a wide range of issues that affect reproductive health, rights, and justice in the U.S. For more information, please download the 2015 Call for Submissions.

The deadline for submission is January 15, 2015.

Winning authors will receive cash prizes: $750 (1st place), $500 (2nd place), or $250 (3rd place). The first place winner will also have a chance at publication with the NYU Review of Law and Social Change.
