Proposed Amendment to Election Candidacy Provision in Bylaws (approved)

Update:  This provision has been approved on September 24th, 2014 and will apply for the First Year Elections.

On September 10, 2014, the SBA Board discussed changes to the Bylaws in order to begin the transition into online elections that are accessible to all McGeorge students.  The following change has been proposed in order to ease the burden of gaining candidacy in light of the shrinking class size:

Candidates: Formal Candidates are those who file a petition of candidacy with the Election Committee, and shall have their names placed on the general election ballot. The petition must contain the signature of at least ten (10) students who meet the voting requirements for that office described below, and that signature does not appear on any other petition of candidacy for that office.

By removing the uniqueness provision from the signatures required on a petition, multiple candidates can be fielded by any cohort (1D, 1E, etc.) at McGeorge without a hard cap based on class size.  With a First Year Evening Division consisting of around 30 students, I asked the SBA Board to support this change for the 1L elections process that will begin next week.

Just like the larger revision of our Bylaws that is still pending a final vote, this is governed by the Article V amendment process displayed below with the intent to ratify this change at our September 19th meeting.  Please submit your comments to any of the SBA Board members for consideration before we meet.

ARTICLE V AMENDMENT OF BYLAWS

The bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the SBA Board. A copy of the amendments must be made available to the student body for viewing for one (1) week to solicit public comments. If there are comments after one (1) week, the SBA must address the comments and vote again. Upon a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the SBA Board on a final version, the bylaws will be amended.
