Funding Requests:

Employment Law Student Association: Presenting Brittany Berzin

Thursday April 7, Spring Mixer. Requesting $300.

Brittany: Plaintiff and Defendant attorneys from the community and club members as well as anyone interested in employment law. We’ve done this in the past and both times it’s been $500 and right now we have $40 in our budget. CDO will help with additional funding. Good opportunity for people interested in employment law to get to know each other. We’ve had students who have found jobs from meeting with attorneys.

AJ: 40 students are attending, where does that come from?

Brittany: Past attendance. We’ve usually had in the 30 range and we’re hoping that people who showed up in the past will come again.

Chanel: Motion to fund in full

Public Legal Services Society

Friday, April 8, PLSS Annual Live and Silent Auction Requesting $2,800

Presenters: Sean Creadick & Sarah Kanbar, Ryan Mahoney

Sean: Executive director of PLSS, we are here to request $2,800 for our live and silent auction. It’s on the 24th and it’s a big tradition at McGeorge. We raise a lot of funds for student summer internships and provided 23 summer grants at about $2,400 each. We are really about giving back to students and that’s what it’s all about. We have one of the lowest dues on campus and the mission statement is to raise a lot of money through this.

Sarah: Those funds are really for the venue and food and drink. Last year it was on campus but this year it will be at the California Museum. Because it is a state building we can only get food from some vendors. We’re waiting on quotes but we’re assuming we will go with Mywell for $5,200. McGeorge Advancement office is taking care of a lot of the informational stuff. Events coordinators will also be contacting corporate sponsors because our goal is to raise $50,000 again this year.

Sean: The breakdown does not include live auctions but only silent auctions. We’re expecting abut $9,000 for the live auction and last year we had quite a few corporate sponsors. We’ve been working with the alumni development office.

Sarah: Alot of alums will be at our auction this year, there will be a small champagne reception with the dean and board of directors. We are inviting attorney’s and alums. Tickets are $30 for students and $50 for general public. We’re doing a California theme so we have an exhibit that will be out as well.

Ryan: I think it’s a great program and I got the grant last year. I’m looking forward to being on the board next year and we really want to help students. We have the welcome barbecue during orientation week as well.

Sean: We spend about $900 a year on events on campus.

Jess: Is this your last event for the year?

Sean: Yes.

AJ: I received funding last year. It’s great for students who want to work for public agencies without worrying

Chanel: Motion to fund in full $2,800.

Latino Law Student Association

Presenting Nickolas Saldavar

Nickolas: We have requested $3,000 to our annual celebracion event. Last year over 80 people attended. It’s a good time, it’s one of the few events you have alumni bringing their famileis and current students bringing families. It’s a great way for people to interact outside of the campus. It’s heavily attended by the Cruz bar association, our local latino bar association. It’s continuing to grow in momentum. We’ve been breaking even approximately the last year. Last year we made about $400 and there was a clawback so $200 went back to SBA. We want to use part of the money we earn to donate to the diversity scholarship. In addition the Spanish club has requested for us to give a place for a silent auction and professor Davies is helping us with that. We’re also working with smaller clubs that are looking to grow but can’t afford a larger event. I’ve currently budgeted and we always try to bring costs down without bringing the event down on itself. It’s a sit down dinner, we take care of the first drink and then people pay after that. This year’s speaker is Deborah Ortiz, our club really promotes diversity. We’re the latino law students and we welcome everyone it truly is for everybody. It’s a big year for us as a group and population because we are now the majority. This years theme is about promoting diversity and effectuating the change. We have Dean Mootz attending as well and I would urge all of you to attend. I would request because typically the 50% would go back I would like to request that the money going to diversity scholarship instead of SBA.

AJ: Where is it at?

Nickolas: The Park, we have a really good working relationship with them. People stay after and go around, it’s really nice to hang out with the attorney’s after. Even professors come out and it’s a lot more relaxed and fun.

AJ: Just as a matter of policy, just because it’s late we’re not necessarily inclined to give you full funding.

Nickolas: I’m sorry that it’s late but I’m a father of six and work full time so I’ve been really busy. I hope that doesn’t impact this because the money is very important for us. When I was here the first year we didn’t have enough interest and membership and it wasn’t held. Since then we had 50 people the first year, 88 last year, and we’re looking to continue growing.

Jess: I’m abstaining but this is a really awesome event, it’s not one that is promoted enough. I think everyone here would benefit. Last year we had Justice Callahan speak. I think we need to promote diversity on campus and now that we have that extra we really want to boost and give some money to the scholarship program.

Keegan: Cost of the speaker?

Nickolas: No cost, just provide dinner and give her a thank you gift which ranges between $60-$100.

Courtney: How late is it?

Bahar: It was somewhere about a week and a half.

Mary: How much did we give last year?

Chanel: Motion to fund in full with a clawback.

Courtney: Second

Derek: I’m just looking at the budget and funding everything in full today we would not have much money.

AJ: We have about $1,800 in reserve.

Derek: It’s a concern going forward also.

AJ: Just so you know there is also extra funding.

Bahar: There’s $9,386.91 in the budget.

Keegan: So that’s all.

AJ: That’s what we’ve alloted for, we still have reserves and the $1,800 we have allotted for a mentorship event in the spring but we can move that to reserves if needed.

Mary: My only concern is there are GLS oral arguments.

Chanel :Because it’s a clawback that money would just be out for just a brief amount of time.

Black Law Society Association:

Presenting Jenice Pratt

Jenice: I’m the president of BLSA, every year we put on family day which is catered by Sandra Dees. We have a DJ and some blow up bounce houses for the kids. This is an event open to families of students, professors etc. Last year we had a new DJ and talked to him about all the music and such. BLSA is asking for $2,950 and right now we have about $2,400 in our account. During diversity week we had the reception we paid for but that is not included in the statement.

AJ: How much did that cost you?

Jenice: The reception was quoted at about $400. It really is open to everyone.

AJ: Are you planning on doing any other big events for the rest of the year?

Jenice: No

Keegan: What are you saving for the $2,000?

Jenice: It’s always been there. Last year it was half funded and in years prior its been fully funded.

Derek: How much have you requested prior?

Jenice: We had $250 for academic series and also our start up funds.

Bahar: Yes it was funded in full.

AJ: So the most we can give you for this event $2,550.

Derek: It seems that money has been a savings account.

Bahar: How much do they have in their account?

AJ: About $2,400 not including their money spent on reception.

Jenice: Last year food was $2,250 and the rest goes to DJ and bounce house.

Mary: The event is $2,950 for 200 people.

Jenice: That’s how much it cost last year.

Crystal: Their question about how much you keep in your account?

Jenice: I know that was the same concern two years ago. I think it’s just because if we were to spend $2,000 for family day and if BLSA can raise $2,000 again last year. BLSA has been doing more on campus without asking for funding request as well where we have dipped into our accounts. Last yaer we didn’t do that many events as we have this year. I think last yaer we only requested for family day.

Courtney: I motion to fund $1,000.

Jess: I was thinking $1,500.

Courtney: I’ll revise to $1,500.

Sports and Entertainment Law Society

Presenting: Anton Babich

Anton Babich: I am president of SELS. We want to go to a Kings game on March 30, 2016. We are requesting $870 for the event from SBA. The total costs $1,200.00. Last year we went to a double game thing with tickets at $10 a piece. This year we are looking at $45 a ticket with a minimum of $10. I put down 30 as a rough estimate. We went to a CAL game during the fall and used our funds for that. I think a lot of people on campus are interested in sports law, the class has about 30 people in it. We wanted to get some networking into the event and the sales rep is interested in getting a meeting beforehand and we would be given a presentation of how to get into sports law and working for the Kings. As for the interest I put down 30 because we sold that many for the CAL game. I know a decent amount of people in the sports law class would be interested as well as the international students. It is very amendable how many tickets we can buy. We would buy a batch of tickets and sell them through tabling and CashNet. It’s $45 for a ticket and we were thinking $45 for non-students and $25 for students. I don’t think $25 would deter sales.

AJ: There’s nothing on Wednesday but that’s after Spring Break.

Mary: Evening students have class.

Anton: It’s after midterms and the only other day was Easter.

Derek: It sounds like this day is the only feasible day.

Anton: I know other games were available but there were different prices. This one was the cheapest day.

Derek: So you’re just looking for the money for funding buying the tickets.

Anton: We have some money in our account to buy tickets and so we have enough money to buy the 10 but we want to buy 20.

Courtney: So the total estimated cost is $1,200?

Anton: I did $42 times 30 tickets so that was $1,260. We could cap it too if we need to. Keep in mind a lot of money would be coming back. At least 55%. We had family members go to the CAL game as well.

AJ: It’s not super academic so that’s good. Do we have any further questions?

Keegan: Motion to fund in full with a clawback on what we give them.

Junior Barrister’s Club – Passing the Par

Presenting: Chanel Saidi

Chanel: Passing the Par has been our most successful event yet. Last year we had about 30 people attend. We spent the morning with a golf instructor who taught us how to work on our swing. After that we went to the club house and had a few beers and hung out for a bit. We’re excited because this year we have opened up the event to the Sacramento Barrister’s Assocation. We expect for a few lawyers to be attending so this allows for the students to get to mix with people they may be able to link up with and get to know. This also allows for the Sacramento Barrister’s to let students know of upcoming events that they can participate in. We are charging students $15 a person and $20 for non-students. We provide golf clubs, balls and three lanes that will be available, maybe more if we need. What we are looking for is for SBA to give us $300 so we can reserve the lanes and instructor and then clawback up to that $300 in any ticket sales we make. We just need to make sure we have the event set up in advance and cannot wait until the weekend of to pay for the reservation.

Derek: Motion to fund in full with clawback

JBC General Meeting:

Presenting: Chanel Saidi

Chanel: This is our general meeting where we will be having a speaker from the Sacramento Barrister’s talking about what goes on in their work day. Our clubs mission is to get students networking with practicing attorneys. We are linked with the Sacramento Barrister’s Association which is a group of practicing attorneys who are under the age of 36 or have been practicing law for less than 5 years. We had a really successful meeting last time that was supposed to be about networking but turned into a lot of questions about what the lawyer’s do on a daily basis. We were competing against a big event on campus so it was a lot of talking between the students who attended and our three guest speakers. So this time we are going to have them talk about that. We are asking for $200 for food and drinks for the event. We usually have in and out and get soda’s. In and out costs about $155-$180 each time so we will be getting burgers and grilled cheeses for the event as well as two packs of sodas.
