All in favor

Barrister’s Ball

Nikki: Tickets sold so far are 120 and we just cut down the limit to 145 with caterer. Expected expenditures are still under way. Right now we have about $6,000 to spend on alcohol and last minute things. No precise schedule at the moment. Most help will be needed cleaning up the event. We have people helping with check in and morning of I won’t be able to help set up because of Mock trial practice but even so we have six people.

Brittany: Be there at 10 am to help set up.

Nikki: The people who are scheduled to be there will have agenda’s sent to them.

Jess: So you’re cutting off the tickets?

Nikki: Yes. There’s about 18 left to sell. The original quote of 220 would have been a large difference in cost so we gave tons of warning in advance.

Funding Requests

Legal Music Society – Neil Negrete presenting

Neil: This is a funding request for Randi Siegle to come to school talking about representation of public figures, celebrities etc. We will be co-sponsoring hopefully with IPSA and SELS. The cost for the club would be $440 per club. Our speaker currently teaches at Boston University of Law, she is going to give a synopsis of the course she teaches there. On the paper we have the cost for her to speak as $1,100. CDO will cover all advertising and printing cost. Each club has $100 from CDO with a few clubs already using their funds. Food for the event is Subway costing $233,28. The event will be on a Friday.

Bahar: Have you met with Rebekah?

Jordan: You’re asking for this to be funded in total from SBA. You only have $75 in your organization in your account. You have co-sponsors do you know how much money they have in their account?

Neil: SELS is relying on SBA funding and IPSA has spent a lot of money since IP week. All clubs are hoping for funding.

Nikki: How many members are in your club?

Neil: Legal music has 15-20. This would be a good event for SELS. IPSA has around 30 members. We are working on getting this to be an MCLE credit. We’re opening it to the larger campus hopefully.

Chanel: Since it’s an MCLE event have you thought about advertising to attorneys and charging for the event for attorney’s who attend? I’m not sure if SBA has ever funded a guest speaker for that large of an amount. I think since it’s open to not only students but practicing attorneys and the main campus we shouldn’t fund in full and maybe find out some more information.

Neil: Yes, we’re waiting to see what our costs are and whether we get approved for MCLE credits.

Keegan: How much are you asking for?

Neil: $1396.33 is the total cost of the event.

Chanel: You should try and get the Sacramento Barrister’s to advertise this as an MCLE credit if it is approved to get more attorney’s to show up. That might give you some money to put towards the event.

Neil: Okay

Derek: Proske is interested in bringing the program to the campus and we’re trying to see if there’s enough interest.

Nikki: If the school is interested in bringing this sort of program why aren’t they funding it?

Jordan: My only concern is you’re expecting 40 people to attend so I’m worried about spending that much money on such a small amount of turn out.

Nikki: Is there anyway to see if Proske can get the school to fund this because it is a tester to bring to the school?

Neil: I can ask him.

Chanel: I want to make a motion to table this for two weeks until our next meeting to give Neil time to come back with answers about MCLE credit approval and pending possible clubs to join in from the larger campus if they are invited to attend.

Jordan: Second

Yay: Nikki, Brittany, Courtney, Bahar, Crystal, Keegan, Jordan, Chanel, Jess

Abstain: Derek conflict of interest – officer in the club.

Criminal Law Society – Sylvia La Rose presenting

Sylvia: We’re requesting money for appetizers and drinks for our annual CLS Mixer. We have invited judges, DA’s and PD’s from the area and will get a good turn out.

Jordan: Who do you have lined up?

Sylvia: We sent out 28 postcards to judges, DA’s and PD’s.

Nikki: Why are you not spending the $600 in your account?

Sylvia: We have the murder mystery party coming up so we want to make sure we have money to cover for that.

Chanel: How much have you requested from the SBA?

Sylvia: No money yet.

Jordan: I think I read on here that first years need to attend a networking event?

Sylvia: Yes.

Jordan: Will the school throw in any money for since 1L’s have to attend a networking event?

Chanel: No, JBC just had an event that counted and the school doesn’t give money to the clubs. Maybe CDO.

Sylvia: No they don’t.

Chanel: I’m going to make a motion to fund the full $350.

Second: Keegan

Yay: Nikki, Brittany, Bahar, Crystal, Keegan, Jordan, Chanel, Jess, Tyler

Courtney: Abstain for conflict of interest

Derek: Abstain

International Law Society – Sarah Kanbar presenting

Sarah Kanbar: President

Sarah: The reason the request was late is because we are trying to do an international law week. We’ve been working with the Globe center and starting next week there will be an information session next week from the study abroad program. Thursday night Globe will be doing an networking event and Friday is a law review symposium. The Wednesday event will be based on our experience at the Hague and opportunities that are there for students. We are going to talk about how McGeorge has a presence abroad as well. We’re asking for $200 for food and the other three events have their own incentive to go to.

Brittany: How late is the request?

Sarah: IT was a week late.

Jordan: You have a large sum in your bank account why are you not using that?

Sarah: During international law week we will be needing funding along the way. We have speakers coming potentially from overseas. We’re trying to ear mark those funds for if that happens. Criminal law society will be co-sponsoring the event with us for $100. We’re requesting $200 in case the request would go through.

Courtney: There’s so many things up in the air with the event and tentative events.

Sarah: We haven’t solidified plans for the speaker because we’re waiting for him to determine his travel plans.

Courtney: How much do you anticipate that would cost?

Nikki: You can always come back to us in the past and when there’s a pretty good amount of money in their account and use that until your potential future events and come back for that.

Chanel: I suggest submitting a funding request just in case and now and then come back if you need to.

Sarah: Last year we had a very absent board.

Tyler: Motion to deny

Derek: Second

Chanel: With a caveat to use your funds for this event and submit funding requests for your future events

Yay: Brittany, Courtney, Derek, Bahar, Tyler, Crystal, Keegan, Jordan, Chanel

Employment and Labor Law Student Association – Absent

Wine Law Society – Bianca Angulo presenting

Bianca Angulo: We have confirmed we have a tour with counsel at Sierra Nevada Brewery for a tour and tasting as well as speaking to a panel with of theier counsel, COO and compliance manager on April 2th. The bus cost is $862.52. We are requesting $500 to pay for part of the bus cost. If we have to pay the full amount we will have no money in our account for our event in the future.

Chanel: Are you charging for students to event? How much are you requesting?

Bianca: We don’t want to. $500 is what we are requesting. I have talked to IP club so we don’t feel comfortable requesting a ton of money from that club and we’re hoping wine law will cover it. We had 35 for Napa last year.

Courtney: Do you have an idea of how much the next event is?

Bianca: I have submitted a request for $250 for that event.

Courtney: I’m not concerned about the event but that you had a request for the future event that doesn’t sit right.

Bianca: If you don’t give us money we wanted to make sure we have money for the second event.

Jordan: Motion to fund in full

Jess: Second

Yay: Tyler, Courtney, Brittany, Crystal, Keegan,

Nay: Bahar, Derek

Abstain: Chanel and Nikki

It does not pass.

Brittany: The only reason you asked for funding for the next event is if we don’t approve.

Bianca: Yes.

Jess: I’m sorry is SBA running out of funds here. We’re denying so many today and this is a really great event.

Chanel: I’m willing to let it change my vote if you promise to use funds from your account for your next event.

Jordan: Motion for funding in full $862.52

Tyler: Second

Yay: Jess, Brittany, Courtney, Tyler, Crystal, Keegan, Jordan, Chanel, Nikki.

Nay: Derek, Bahar

Public Legal Services Society – Absent

Moot Court Society – Catherine Hawe presenting

Catherine Hawe: We are here to ask for $200 for our How to Prepare a Winning Oral Argument event to help GLS II students with oral arguments. The event will be on Wednesday March 2. This year we are opening the event to both 1L and 2L’s because 1L’s will be getting their packet for Moot Court competition. We have other events coming up this year. We would take $200 if amended.

Jordan: Is this also the 1L competition meeting?

Catherine: No, but the information session and competition problem distributes March 1st, Monday and this is on Tuesday. It’s mainly targeted to 2L’s but we’re opening it up to 1L’s because it is a generic presentation. We do a lot of GLS II events.

Chanel: Motion to fund for amended amount of $200
