General Meeting 2/1/15

FBA funding approved

Shoeb M. taking over note taking (pardon the format!)

Side board note: We need to start submitting event requests to have meeting on Sundays.

Item 4. Federalist Society

Dustin: issue of lateness so we’ll vote separately

First: Mark Mecler to be hosted about an article 5 convention for amendment to the federal constitution. first event had 56 people, second had 49, expecting 50-60 people to come. evening event so it draws more people because it’s convenient for people. In n out also draws a lot of people. Total requesting is 231.23 to cover food, chips, water, drinks. (all in funding request)

The reason it’s late is because dustin submitted the funding request the day they confirmed the speaker.

Lexi: need to check with school and calendar and be prepared to make a case about why it won’t interfere with something on the calendar.

Lexi: Moves to fund in full 4 yays (aparna, chanel, lexi, aj), no nays, 2 abstentions (stephen and dustin)

Motion Granted!

Stephen: Same club (fed society) got in contact with supreme court justice from Minnesota. He confirmed last week he’s doing another event at davis and wants to do 2 schools. Will do davis at noon and mcg at 5. Right before evening con law class, been in touch with Simms and he said he’d encourage the class to go and attend himself. Stephen will work up a flyer and deliver it to Simms within next couple weeks. David Strauss is an author, teacher, supreme court justice of minnesota, and he’s gonna run the gambit from privacy to 4th amd issues. Costs is for burgers drinks and chips. Not sure if dinner is happening after but administration is planning a bar event on tuesday so that’s why this is going to be monday 23rd. Funding request needs a change from 24th to 23rd.

Dustin: Part of the thing fed society does it take the speakers to dinner but national chapter helps out and they’re not asking for that portion from funds.

Lexi: This is a great event but it’s the second within a close amount of time so we need to be sensitive to funds available and make sure we don’t preference one (albeit very good club) over others. Lexi would suggest that as they’re asking for SBA funds in the future, take into account the fairness to others.

Lexi: moves to fund in full with caveat about taking other clubs into account.

Chanel seconds!

Yes: all

Abst. Dustin and Stephen

No: none.

Motion granted.

Item 5

Lexi: as you remember last year the matter came out that the ABA law school division is fighting back against the 12 unit can’t work more than 20 hrs a week rule. ABA in response finally made it so that it’s not an ABA rule, Notwithstanding the change to the aba rules, the school continues to maintain the rule as a local rule.

AJ: It’s actually 15 hours a week now. But I think it’s across the board because Patricia was telling him outside of work study she wanted to hire students who weren’t work study but they’re still subject to 15 hour thing.

Lexi: Suggest we talk about the local rule with regards to the ABA rule. Lexi asks AJ to do further research about his above mention so that we can discuss it further. At least one student is appealing the rule be repealed and it seems fair because ABA has quit the rule themselves. Does this board agree or resolve that we are in support of removing the school’s rule of prohibiting an excess of 20 (or 15) hours a week.

Stephen: I feel people work at their own peril, Sone can do it some can’t and we should approach the appropriate dean about the rules (maybe ask to come to the meeting to figure out their policy reasoning, and maybe consider writing a letter.

Aparna: We should meet with admin first before writing any letters.

Dustin: I wanna hear the admin’s policy reasons for it.

MOTION

Lexi: I move then based on our discussion that the SBA board resolves to discuss this with admin and to follow it up with a writing of some sort.

Dustin SECONDS

Unanimous YES. No opposed no abstentions.

ITEM 6. Chanel: we spoke about this last time.

Stephen: they ended up getting this funded and there was extra food and etc. left over.

Aparna: reflects students said it wasn’t as constructive as they had hoped.

Lexi: It was important and even if it’s not outstanding we’re doing an important thing.

Dustin: I don’t think sba should fund this in full.

Lexi: SBa has been taking a very active role in our school’s bar pass rate.

Stephen: (I missed what you said I’m sorry!)

Lexi: The important part of the communication is that this is the beginning of talking about those things and we did learn from the event that the school has started new things like employing a bar tutor who is here to help bar takers. She’s helping the feb bar takers prepare. She is outstanding, she knows her metrics, she provides tangible support. School hasn’t clarified how it will work for july takers she is here. There was a lot of discussion about students asking what the school is doing, and lexi feels this is critical in the first steps to find out what’s happening and make sure they’re actually helping us and we’re well informed about what the school is doing. Maybe the number amount can be debated but Lexi feels it’s important for SBA to be active about the bar pass rate.

Stephen: Have they approached any of the bar prep people to set up little tables and provide food? It might be good to have themis and barbri etc there to help and maybe provide funding.

Lexi: That’s a good idea but it’s also a school event so they might serve as a distraction from what we’re trying to do. There’s something to that for other events with regards to bar taking – the vendors should pay considering students pay them so much. It would be good to ask them to provide and bring their tables and participate. But for this it’s important we put some money where out mouth is at risk of not supporting the school’s bar outreach efforts. But the money amount can be discussed.

Aparna: is this event for everyone?

Stephen: It’s for people taking the bar and the panel is last year’s bar takers.

Lexi: It’s some of our recent bar passing alumni. Coming back to talk to students about what they did. It will also be recorded for the SBA blog so students can watch.

Aparna: realistically I don’t know how many people are interested in hearing anecdotal information from prior bar takers.

Dustin: Student money should go to student activities. This is somethign the admin wants to put on and I don’t feel it’s fair to finance their projects with student money. SBA funds should go to student activities relevant to everyone, not just people who are taking the bar. Dustin has an issue with why SBA has to pay for it.

Lexi: It’s important to note that these types of events would not be happening at all if it werent for Ernesto and the students pushing the admin on this issue. If this is something we as SBA feel is important it sends a message to the school. We could do the event and be involved without food but we should be willing to put something forward.

Chanel: I think 400 is what they requested last time, and they ended up getting denied and finding funding elsewhere. I believe that SBA should support bar pass with the school, but chanel feels that though we should show our support, but they did find so much extra funding that didn’t come from student funds that they had more than enough.

AJ: Even 150 might be fair enough to show we’re on board and it’s not excessive.

AJ: MOTION to fund at 150.

Chanel: SECOND
