SBA Update: Alumni Events During the Break, Assessments, Bylaws

Alumni Events During the Break

Our Board of Alumni are a group of McGeorge attorneys that volunteer their time and donate regularly to our school.  During the holiday break, they will be hosting a series of chapter events for CLEs and networking.  These events are freefor students to attend (both the CLE and the reception) and are great opportunities to network.  I strongly encourage you to RSVP with our Alumni Relations Manager Stevey Clement and put it on your calendar if you are in the area.  This is probably the best first step to searching for an internship or (if you are graduating soon) looking for work.

Assessments

I have heard from a great number of you about the challenges the assessment schedule has brought (especially if you were part of the unfortunate group of students who had upwards of 6 assessments in 4 to 5 weeks time).  I just want to say that both myself and the entire SBA Board have communicated those concerns to Dean Mootz.  During the last faculty meeting this month (the monthly meeting I am invited to represent students at as SBA President), I spoke to the faculty as well and expressed my concern that students are given schedules that are not simply difficult, but rather are impossible to perform at a level they expect of themselves.  One of the fundamental things that need to change about the new curriculum schedule is the information provided to students when we register for classes over the summer.

I’ve made the request that less weight be given to assessments during the spring semester in the short term and in the long term students are given all relevant information of the dates and number of assessments before they register for classes this next summer.  That way people can manage their schedules rather than be caught blind sided by a flood of tests after committing to additional obligations designed to improve their resume.

Bylaw Updates and Public Comment

At our final meeting for the fall semester, the SBA Board approved the proposed changes to our Bylaws that have been pending a final vote after the 1L elections.  Following the basic tenets of administrative law in regards to notice, we have issued additional changes and modifications for additional student comment while approving the changes that have been on circulation since August.  Please contact myself or anyone on the SBA Board should you have questions.  Those changes and modifications can be found here.
