2014 McGeorge Orientation Scavenger Hunt

On Thursday August 14th, 2014, the incoming first year law students used their wits, personality, and scrutinizing minds to compete in the Orientation Week Scavenger Hunt.  Like any flawlessly executed event the first years were unaware of the many planning meetings that took place over the summer among faculty and the second year SBA evening representative, the training of some 37 volunteers, or the efforts of setup and grounds crews hours before the start of the quest.

At 3:00 in the afternoon the students arrived most of whom appeared wide-eyed and disjointed from their fellow classmates.  They checked in and received their blue shirts and team assignments.   Thirty minutes later it was off to the races on an elaborate quest designed to introduce the students to the campus, faculty, and their classmates.  Some of the highlights included devouring or chugging an item from the vending machines in the gazebo, trying on the George Bush head in Professor Levine’s office, matching the Supreme Court Justices names and pictures in the Courtroom with Professor Bricker, eating a bag of popcorn in the Career Development office, and taking “selfies” posted to a designated Facebook page (www.facebook.com/McGeorgeScavengerHunt2014).  The temperature increased and the day grew hot which began the smelting process, where bonds were clearly forged among the students.  There were creative team names like “Blue Who”, “Team Too Hoots”,  and smiles abound by the time the winners were crowned by the pool at the first of many mixers for these first years.  Refreshments and delicious fare by Bon Appetit greeted the students exasperated from a whirlwind competition.

From the eyes of this observer, whom had skipped this very event two years ago thinking it was silly, I can clearly state that it is events like this that make McGeorge a community.  The beginnings of bonds forged at Pacific, McGeorge between students and classmates that are carried into practice and the legal community for the rest of these future alums lives and careers.
