How to Earn Volunteer Hours

Students may earn required volunteer hours by donating their time or special skill to the PLSS Auction. All volunteer hours must be completed and submitted to PLSS prior to the submission deadline.   Any applicant failing to volunteer the required number of hours to a PLSS sponsored event will not be eligible for the Grant.

PLSS Live and Silent Auction

Most students earn their hours by volunteering at the Annual PLSS Live and Silent Auction.  Students may earn their hours at this event in the following ways:

  • Solicit donations from family, friends and local businessesTo download the formal PLSS Solicitation Letter and the Donation Response Form  visit the Information for Students page
  • Volunteer at a phone bank– More information regarding phone bank times and locations will be announced closer to the day of the auction.
  • Donate a skill or service– To learn more about the skills/services donated by students in previous years, or to donate your unique skill or service today, click here
  • Organize and label auction items; Put together silent auction baskets: On the day before the auction, we will need 5 volunteers for 4 to 5 hours to help us organize and plan the arrangement of auction items, label and log items, and put together eye-pleasing baskets for certain silent auction items.
  • Work at the auction as a host/hostessPLSS is looking for students who are both extroverted and passionate about public service to represent the face of our organization at the auction. Duties may include: greeting guests and helping them find their assigned table, standing behind silent auction tables and encouraging guests to bid on items, speaking about your personal experiences and how the summer grant benefited you, and answering various questions about PLSS and the summer grant. To volunteer, please send an email to mcgeorgeplss@gmail.com and include a paragraph about why you think you would be a good mingler/representative of PLSS at the auction.
  • Help with silent auction set-up We are hoping to have hundreds of auction items this year and will need between 15 and 20 volunteers to help carry and transport items to the auction venue (use of students own car/truck may be required), set-up of silent auction tables. Please keep in mind that there is a 4 hour cap on the number of hours students may earn by working at the auction.
  • Sell tickets (ie, “table”) in the Student CenterIf you are interested in tabling in the student center, please email mcgeorgeplss@gmail.com with the hours that you are available. Possible hours for tabling are between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., or 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday
  • Sell tickets to community membersTickets will be sold to the community exclusively via the internet this year. At check-out, purchasers will be able to indicate whether a student advertised/informed them of the auction.
  • Auction Wrap-UpStudent volunteers will be needed for the Saturday and Sunday following the Auction to help log bid winners, distribute Auction items that were not picked up at the event and follow-up with various donors. This position is the last opportunity for students to earn their volunteer hours for the year!

If you have a skill or item you would like to donate to the auction, email a short description of the auction item to mcgeorgeplss@gmail.com. We can arrange for auction items to be picked up at your home or business at your convenience.
