Message from the Executive Director- March 2013

Dear PLSS Members & Friends:

Since we’re swamped with Auction prep and solicitation, (and then there’s that whole finals thing, too, huh?), we’ll keep this month’s email short and sweet…

Every year the Board is saddened to hear that many otherwise eligible students are disqualified from receiving the grant because they did not secure an internship offer by the grant application deadline. It is with this in mind that we’ve attempted to provide you with as many opportunities as possible this year to help you secure a summer position: the Public Law & Policy Meet and Greet, the Public Interest Career Fair, the Environmental Internship Fair, and the PLSS Internship Assistance Program through the CDO. In a last-ditch effort to help all of our interested and qualified members secure a placement before the grant due date, I’ve compiled a list of grant-qualifying internships for your convenience. Take a few minutes to check ’em out here and, if interested, follow the listed link to the CDO website to apply ASAP!

Along the same vein: If you’re worried about getting in your required 7 volunteer hours for the grant, we’ve got a great opportunity for you to earn up to 3 hours this week! Join the PLSS Board this Thursday, March 14th, between 4:00 and 7:00 pm for our Phone Bank Power Hour. We’ll be meeting in the new PLSS House (on the corner of 32ndSt. and 5th Ave. behind the Terracotta house) where food and drinks will be provided. Also, since we understand that calling businesses to request donations can be a bit awkward for first-timers, we’ll be offering a solicitation tutorial session for our less experienced volunteers.

Finally, in case you somehow missed it, I just want to send all our eligible members a gentle reminder that the grant application has been released and is now due in only two short weeks. (You can find the 2013 Application under the Summer Grant Program tab. ) To all my fellow procrastinators: make sure you glance over the application ASAP as it contains forms that must be completed by your employer and received by the CDO on or before the application due date!

This month’s final thought comes to us from history’s arguably brightest mind –

“The world is a dangerous place. Not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”  ~ Albert Einstein

Genius, no?

Cheers!

-Amanda Dickey, PLSS Executive Director
