Message from the Executive Director- April 2013

Dear PLSS Members & Friends:

With only a month left before finals, and less than three weeks ’til the Auction, the Board has a few VERY important announcements for our members. Thus, I’ll forego my generally long-winded intro and get right to the (bullet) point(s) :

  • PLSS Board Elections this Thursday, April 11th in S-19

Want to sit on the board of the most resource-rich student club on campus? Want to have the ear of hundreds of student members and top administrators? Run for the PLSS Board!!

Elections will be held on Thursday, April 11 at 12:00 pm in S-19 (upstairs in the Student Center) for the following board seats: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Chair, and Community Outreach Chair. (To learn more about the responsibilities of each board position, please read the highlighted portions of the 2012-2013 PLSS Constitution .)To apply, email us a 1-2 paragraph “letter of intent” with: (1) The Board position you are running for; (2) Why you think you are a good candidate for that position; and (3) A description of your past and/or present commitment to public interest. Your letter of intent must be submitted to mcgeorgeplss@gmail.com no later than April 10, 2013!

  • 2013 Summer Grant Announcements

True to our word, grant awards were announced last Friday, April 5th, by the CDO. Whether or not you received an email from the CDO regarding the status of your application, please read the below information to ensure you do not miss any important deadlines or requirements for receipt of the grant.

Grant applicants who received a grant award on April 5th: Keep in mind that grant awards are contingent upon the awardees completion and submission of his or her volunteer hours by April 26th. (A short description of your volunteer hours should be submitted to the Volunteer Coordinator, Lauren Foust, at l_foust@u.pacific.edu.) Applicants who fail to complete the 7 hour requirement, or who fail to submit verification of same to the Volunteer Coordinator, will not receive their grant award.

Grant applicants who did not receive an award on the 5th: Don’t be discouraged just yet! Every year there are students who are initially chosen to receive the grant but who fail to complete the volunteer hour requirement or who cannot accept the grant for other reasons. When this happens, the selection committee reallocates the remaining grant funds to the next qualified applicant on their list. In other words, if you are notified on April 5th that you didn’t receive a grant, you may still have a chance of receiving one as long as you complete the volunteer hour requirement.Last year, we were able to offer 4 additional applicants the grant after they were initially denied, in part because 1 or more awardees declined the grant, and in part because we received additional last-minute funding. Thus, we strongly suggest that you complete your 7 volunteer hours toward the PLSS Auction, regardless of whether you are notified on April 5th that you received a grant.

  • Last Day to Turn-In Auction Donations is April 13th

Volunteers: We need your Auction items ASAP!

The PLSS Board will be meeting this weekend to organize and list auction items for the Auction brochure. We ask that our volunteers please ensure that they have picked-up and/or submitted all secured donations to us on or before Saturday, April 13th. (Donations can be dropped off to the terracotta building at 3200 5th Ave., Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.) Because we have to send brochures to print at the beginning of next week, any donation submitted after this weekend may or may not make it into the Auction. So please please please get your items to us by the end of this week!! (To make special arrangements for drop-off of an auction item, please contact a_dickey1@u.pacific.edu.)

I conclude this month’s Message with a tribute to YOU- the envelope-pushers, the dreamers, the revolutionaries, and the innovators. Without the commitment and support of our incredible members and volunteers, there is truly no way we could pull-off such a large-scale event every year. We appreciate each and every one of you and look forward to celebrating our joint success at the Auction!

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as crazy, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who DO.” ~Apple Inc.

Cheers!
